This was the warmest answer yet. Histopicker got it right in his PM's to me on his second guess!

My first guess was a 120mm "pig iron" incendiary shell from an artillery gun... but it appears to be more like a 70 mm if that's one of the 4" stickers near the base.

Looks like a chemical/ smoke shell from a artillery piece. Maybe a 4.2" M2 mortar?
