You are really making progress. Those Dutch ovens are my favorite pots to cook with,and yours are looking good. That will be a nice present for your buddy.
Thanks... nice present for us both. He supplied the trashed pair, I get to keep one of the pair for my time/efforts. The frying pan... found at a thrift store yesterday, never been seasoned/used.

I WISH I had some in my yard. No joy. Just "protected" squirrels, and neighborhood cats passing through after crapping in the flower beds and scratching my stair posts. LOL

Back in his days as a cement finisher, my dad worked with a guy that not only raved about eating rabbit, but had a specialized taste for it, great cook with it...

Dad found himself an alley cat in the streets of Anchorage, caught/killed it, cooked it up, and brought it to feed his co-worker. After rounds and rounds of "this is the best rabbit I've ever eaten..." yup, dad spilled the beans when he'd about polished it off. A hearty laugh was had by all (but one... who turned green).

Update...

I've tried:

Crisco=Not bad/great
Olive Oil=Meh
Vegetable Oil=Meh
Butter=Not bad/great
Bacon Grease=Pretty good

None of the above were giving me that polymerization I've been looking for.

I finally found/bought some Flax Seed Oil in the natural foods section at a grocery store. I didn't strip the seasoning already present, I gave it a light coating and into a 425F oven for half an hour. Then, once down to about 200F during the cool-down, another thin coat. This morning, there's that polymer shine to the cast iron I've been looking for, the surface isn't "wet" with oil either.

Heated up the skillet and a dab of butter, and cracked an egg into it. Bingo! The egg slides around like an oiled teflon pan, wiped clean with a paper towel, and a quick wipe with a cloth towel impregnated with the Flax Seed Oil.

Flax Seed Oil/oiled towel should live in the fridge.

Sounds like you are on to something! Way too much work for women in the kitchen but I bet the cook great!

This may sound like heresy to a purist, but since I bought my wife a porcelain coated iron Dutch oven, she doesn't want to use a plain one again. All the benefits...none of the fuss.

Finding what WORKS was the effort here... as well as learning how to restore trashed stuff. But, a cared for/new piece... it's just as simple as I described above for day to day use.

I'll bet they're great to use... too rich for my pocket though.

Definitely more than free "trashed" pots, but if you are buying new, they are only a little more but worth the up charge.
