Hog callers

Hi, I’m a new member. My introduction to Lone Star Boars was when I took your advice a few years ago and brought a RIX Storm 3
Thanks for that the scope has helped me kill a lot of pigs. I have since got the Storm 3R and the range finder and ballistic calculator is great.
I’m asking what hog calling gadgets you recommend

Welcome to the fray. Hope you get a reply soon. This place isn't getting the traffic it once did. Another place to reach out is 68forums.com if you find no helpful insight with this posting. I'm not a hog hunter, so not much help concerning your question, however, I do not recall hearing talk of calling hogs in, other than one family in Texas. It's been so many years, I don't recall his username, but I do remember he and his wife had good success with calling. I do remember they have a YouTube channel called "Hog Zombies" and offered up quite a bit of content there. Hope that helps you some.

Thanks for all of that, appreciated

Glad to have you here, Harry. Calling hogs can be hit or miss depending on pressure, food sources, and how the local sounders react, but it’s definitely worth experimenting with if you’re already set up with good thermal.

If you try an electronic caller, I’d start with distress/piglet sounds and keep the volume realistic rather than blasting it. Sometimes they’ll come in curious or aggressive, sometimes they’ll vanish. Let us know what you end up trying and how it works in your area.

I hunt in the South Texas Brush Country and have both the Foxpro X-24 loaded with MFK hog sounds and the Convergent Hunting Solutions Bullet HP loaded with Glenn Guess hog sounds. I think the bullet works better as it has more base and the sounds are more realistic. Not that MFK hog sounds are bad but I think the lack of base in the Foxpro hurts it for hogs. Now for Coyotes and other predators, its Foxpro all the way as it really reaches out far.

Glenn's calling does seem to work well for him and his family.

I've been revamping the forum all day. Hopefully we can get this old beast running again. The email notifications are still down they are migrating the forum to a new server right now. There are actually a couple thousand new members that have tried to join but they are not getting the email with confirmation link. If I can get it working I will open it all up and start spreading the word its open for buisness.

Update on calling based on my experience this past weekend. I am in an elevated blind on my small ranch 50 yards from one of my feeders where I constantly see big boars. The cold front blew in Friday with strong north winds but Saturday, this north wind dies down to maybe 5mph - perfect conditions to see hogs. I set my Bullet HP right on top of the feeder to project out across the thick brush. At the ranch next to me, the owner and a few buddies are staying the night and having some adult beverages outside and talking rather loudly. As the crow flies, they are approximately 300 yards away from their voices carry perfectly in the flat landscape of the brush country. I think to myself, "Dang, my goose is cooked, nothing is going to come out with this noise and that's exactly what happened, nothing. Knowing they will eventually go to bed, I wait them out. The feeder goes off at midnight and everything goes quiet around 12:15am.

I can't recall if it was Todd, Glenn Guess, or maybe AI but somewhere along the way I learned to ensure you are "Telling a story" with your call selection and not playing random sounds. I type in AI on my phone what exactly where I am, what's going on with the neighbors, and how to proceed. AI tells me to start with light grunts and feeding sounds at 25% right after it goes all quiet and be ready as the hogs will likely rush the feeder as they heard it go off (at midnight) but hung up in the brush due to the noise. That's exactly what happened....the call told the story of a calmly feeding sounder and a massive group of sub adults crashes in...bingo!!
