Had a chance to hunt with Myron Morrow last summer for a night, but unfortunately it was during the absolute worst rainy part of the summer here in SWFL with visibility about 3" past our noses. Got one right b/f the rain then it was a 'wash'. As luck would have it he is in town for some vacation time with family and we squeezed another hunt in last night. Our lease has been turned upside down with logging since early November the deer season is simply a giant turd flush, but as Myron predicted this cold front got the hogs up and moving a bit. Even the thermal hog hunting has been a joke I had been on 4 thermal hunts the last couple of weeks about 3-4 hours each and never saw a single hog....until last night.
Didn't take us long to roll up on a likely section of freshly planted rye and I was walking outside the truck to look up ahead and I spot what I think is a lone boar so ....'hey numb nuts slow up that looks hoggy'. Myron was on the other side with his REAP IR(good grief is that thing sick) and looks up ahead and says '100 percent let's go) which was impressive were were still several hundred-ish out. Myron, my buddy and I were lucky walked right into a west wind and got to maybe 75 yards we have a preserve and a state park bordering so you just kind of have to wing it with wind and approaches. We wanted Myron to get a solid FL pig under his belt and boy oh boy talk about uneventful right in the neck bang flop. Wish I had more drama to report, but Myron is a stone cold killer he hit the light switch and that was it. The other holes you see are from these two idiots he was with who like to shoot stuff even after it's down we dumped a few extra ya know just to be sure.
My buddy had to get home and supervise a sleep over with his kids so Myron and I dropped him at camp and wanted to get another hour or so. We get maybe 5 minutes south of camp and through the hot fence to the rye fields and Myron says 'whoa ha ha throw it in park dude he's like 50 yards we might run over him!'. Jump out slap on thermals and I think he was wise to us actually Myron said he looked up right as we shot, but it didn't matter he was destined to be buzzard breakfast. Was cool to get one of these two tone fellers I've been wanting to roll one and he obliged by walking in front of a bullet for me.
Just a great night can't say enough about Myron's patience and generosity he took a ton of time to patiently talk with several other guys who were brand new to thermal last night. He was a big hit our buddy who runs the lease was there and he can't wait for Myron to come back soon after spring turkey is over. We had a blast, ball busting, laughing, FREEZING and got blessed with a couple of pigs to shoot at.
