Duck season

Back to duck season. Actually it's almost come and gone here. This year has been tough in my neck of the woods and was especially difficult after last years spectacular season.

We've been extremely dry and low water this year. In fact, it's just been in the past three weeks that we've been able to hunt our best blind. And only could get to it by boat last week for the first time.

This past Saturday however made up for all the slow days this year. We banged them up real good and in short order. Back to the camp with three limits of very responsive mallards before 8am.

I finished out that morning with a double on these two beautiful specimens.

Then it rained cats and dogs, terrible thunder storm that scattered the ducks.

Back at camp now for the last hurrah with the season ending this Sunday.

That's an awesome hunt. Don't think I ever remember a day that good in LA even whe I was young.

Been really good again this year. Got two bands so far. FA540D0A-A597-46DC-9023-A17B5214D593.jpeg We’ve had ice for past few days and today was frozen solid. But we managed.

Yesterday had a great hunt. Six limits. Two days ago was my first band in while and the second this morning.

Many years ago I killed a band two days in a row however the first band occurred on the last day of the season and the next band I got on the first day of the following season, so not quite the same span of time as this week.

Haha

Have also had three hunts where we’ve killed specks this year. That’s always a lot of fun to kill those geese while duck hunting.

One goose on one hunt, then a couple of days later got three and the following day got three more.

If I could call those things in better than I can we probably could’ve had 15 one of those days because we were absolutely covered up with them. 3CEC81ED-0796-4765-9F58-71D1EFAF148A.jpeg8BAD75D0-6E6F-4D32-B28B-3694C2AEC006.jpeg

I really need to practice more with that call with someone who knows how to call specks because they are so fun to decoy, and wonderful to cook on the grill.

I have duck hunted Wisconsin, Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas off the top of my head....when I see those pics I almost get teary eyed thinking about my labs and freezing cold and wind. Very cool memories...Thank you! It's been a long time it seems.

I haven’t had much else to report hog or critter wise lately but I knew some of y’all enjoy this too. Even bought a new thermal scope but just haven’t used it much.

I hope you’ll find the time to get out again sometime soon. It has been really special this whole month of January here.

Lots of cold days and lots of wind. We’ve had two cold snaps in the past three weeks. Like low teens - single digit overnight low temps. This ice was about 4” thick. Broke it out with the tractor. B467AA49-3078-4775-A690-78F15F6916B4.jpeg

She’s twelve now. Honestly she doesn’t get to go much anymore. Too hard on her.

Sad. And I don’t have the heart to get another one while she’s still alive.
Something to consider? Get a pup... let HER pass her baton to the pup... then, that much more of HER lives on in the next generation. It's amazing how much they learn from an older dog mentoring them.
