    Steel shot for hogs

Planning on using some #1 steel starting out at 1500 fps. Very close range less than 30 yards from a tree stand. At that range it will penetrate one side of a steel 55 gallon drum and dent the other side. Seems like it will do the job if aimed right. Anyone else ever use steel shot for hogs?

No but seems they have some big hogs there.

    CSASS .308 vs six8

The AR platform is nice but I have used bolt guns in many different cartridges for night hunting feral hogs with good results. I don't sling running shots into the night anyway so if I get a second shot it usually is a finisher. Bolt guns are lighter, have pretty good triggers and are...

Personal experiences with the 5.56 and hogs

My first AR was a 5.56 just like most here. It was an A1 version and I really like shooting it but it had a non removable carry handle and I never saw a hog while I had it out. Then there was a parade of Flat top AR's all in 5.56 that I did use for night hunting feral hogs. I shot more than a...

3rd hog with Snares this week

There was another guy that had a 3 prong spear doing the same thing in Florida. I'm too old for it myself.

3rd hog with Snares this week

When I was along my 1911 was the safety device. If the difference is between getting hurt or paying a fine I will gladly do the latter. I will say he didn't throw the spear and he had some epic struggles waiting on the pig to die more than once. His spear is made from a heavy duty mop handle, a...

3rd hog with Snares this week

Couldn't use a firearm and he would just leave his spear out near his snares. He liked company when he did it for sure.

    CSASS .308 vs six8

A mag full of 308 adds some weight too. Seems like 11 pounds is where most 308's end up after being fully outfitted and loaded.

    5.56/223

If your shooting paper seriously or plinking steel I think it's worth it. 75 grain bullets seem to up it's game a bit but you can buy them off the shelf.

3rd hog with Snares this week

I have snared several that the other hogs or coyotes killed before I got to them but usually they are alive and can be frisky. I knew a guy that was snaring them and killing them with a spear along the Trinity river bottom.

    120 SST and the 270

The Lehigh controlled chaos was a fail, could not stop one in 5 jugs!

    120 SST and the 270

Tested the 110 grain Siera ProHunter from my 6.8 on water filled milk jugs. Bullet going approximately 2500 fps penetrated 4 jugs and I found it a foot behind the last jug. It broke up the first three and just made a hole through the fourth.

    Have a 6.8 coming

Just got 2 bags of Hornady brass also. I'm going to wear out the Remington brass first then switch to SSA and Hornady.

I'm running a rifle buffer already but when and if I get a can I will get an adjustable gas block.

I think I will live with it as the slight dent isn't that much of a problem.

    Have a 6.8 coming

So then I should be getting near 2500 fps. Perfect. The ProHunter is a preety soft bullet but I did some water filled milk jug testing and it penetrated four jugs, found it laying on the ground a foot behind the 4th jug. The core anyway as the jacket broke up in pieces through the 2nd and 3rd...

    Have a 6.8 coming

I worked the 6.5 magazine a bit with a dremel to smooth feeding by lowering the front lip a bit and now it doesn't scratch the case like it did, now I have to remove some burrs from the feed ramp and there will be no more marked cases. I also shortened COAL a bit more so the bullet ogive does...

    Have a 6.8 coming

Worked up to 28.0 grains of H322 under the Prohunter and stopped there, MOA accuracy and perfect function. My only real snivel is that the case mouth is still being slightly flattened on one side. An annoyance is that the Remington brass uses large rifle primers and the other brass, SSA uses...
