Sidearm that you carry while hunting

Was thinking it may be smart to have a sidearm on me while hunting hogs to dispatch any hogs that are not dead when I get up on them. I will be starting off with a normal scope and not a thermal so I will be hunting during daylight or dawn/dusk times. What does everyone use when they go into the field? I want to make sure I get an appreciation for what it takes to put a hog out of it's misery or drop it should I get charged. What type of bullets do you recommend, JHP, HydraShok, CorBon..etc?

I carry a 1911 45acp. I used to use jhp but the just don't have the penatraition to knock down a charging pig. I had a 150 plus pound boar get less than a foot from me. I hit it with 7 shots for sure with 230gr jhp. Final one has right in the brain bucket. I now use plain old ball ammo. Works great.

I carry a Glock 20 in 10mm. 15+1 rounds of 200g jacketed hollow points gives you a sense of security. Only needed it twice so far, but it puts the smack down on a hog nicely.

.22 pistol 'cuz it's cheap and relatively quiet, although I used to carry a 9mm and sometimes consider going back.
I'm not worried about being charged by a hog. If something like that should occur there's no way I'm going to drop my rifle and grapple for a sidearm.

Wilson Combat CQB 1911 .45 acp with 230 gr. Federal HST. It is my normal carry gun, on the street or in the field. I don't change my SD ammo for hunting.

I shoot surviving downed hogs with my rifle most of the time. What der Teufel said for chargers.

Have used several different pistol calibers to hunt hogs and only one has dropped in it's tracks. That was with a Glock 23 .40 cal. Only reason he dropped was because it was a lucky neck shot after stalking to within 10 yards. I would just shot em again with your rifle. No sidearm will have "stopping power" unless you hit them in the beaner or spine and in that case any caliber will work. Was just in the thick brush tonight tracking one I shot with my bow. Do it all the time without a gun and never had an issue. You'll probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than being charged. Having said that, I'll probably get slashed the next time I go out. I rarely carry due to weight and comfort. If I do it's to protect from those crazy two legged creatures out there today. Good luck on your hunt, you'll be hooked....no pun intended.

I have a trappers mentality and carry my Ruger MK3 /.22 everywhere I go. Use it for dispatching those wigglers, for trapped hogs and I may do a little squirrel hunting or bunnies, coons etc...while I am out playing. I have carried .40's and 45's but the weight and bulk didn't do me much good especially on long walks.

To old to carry extra weight! I let someone else do that, the rifle works great. What ever you use for your carry. If you don’t carry then look into the XD models from Springfield, they carry lots and lots of bullets so you don’t have to reload as often!!:). BANG BANG!!

Kimber Ultra Carry II in 45 acp with 230 gr fmj. 3 inch barrel and alloy frame makes it pretty easy to carry.

XD45 but probably start using ball ammo. Sometimes the wigglers can still absorb a few head shots before they relax.

I have shot several hogs with my Glock 20. It has a 6" bbl and I use Double Tap 200gr WFNGC ammo. It is also outfitted with a Veridian green daylight laser.
With the availability of 16rds there is not a hog alive that I would not fight on the ground with this gun. It is simply too large for every hunt carry. --- SAWMAN

I carry a Glock 23 with a 357Sig barrel in it and Gold Dot ammo. I carry it while at the property, you never know when you may need it.

Kimber 1911 with custom hog stopping rounds that I make myself. Hogs can be extremely hard to kill sometimes. In my opinion, a hog needs devastating shock and/or precise bullet placement to shut down the central nervous system and stop the twitching.
