I stalked to within 70 yards of this group that for whatever reason had decided to gather around this well head that has a 8x10 chain link fence around it. The fence doesn't provide very much cover and when four hogs started wandering to my left I figured I was fixin to get busted so I picked one and shot. Please comment on what I could have done differently! It is so frustrating to see that many hogs and not get a decent follow up shot. Was I too close or should I have taken the time to work my way more to the right and get around the fence? I just don't know.

Who knows?
Sometimes when it looks like I'm about to be busted, I just pick a hog and shoot. Then I see how many other hogs were there, and what better targets were available, but some things can't be controlled.
You got one, and that's infinitely better than none.

Which cross hair do you use? I think the picture in picture cross hair is great for long distance shots but would a detriment when trying to drop multiple hogs due to the decreased field of view. I'd the main cross hairs since it provides a greater field of view.

It’s hard to second guess anyone’s decision when you aren’t even there at the time. Let’s assume you would have been busted and had no choice but to shoot when you did. First, I would probably have tried taking out a hog closest to the fence in hopes of separating the other few that had wandered off, but remember, even if it is pitch black out, they remember the direction that they just came from and when panicked, the first thing they will try to do is get back in that direction. You still might not have had any follow up shots.

First, glad you got one man!

Second, sometimes it just is luck. I was real lucky last time.

Third, if I'm not sure which way they'll go, I shoot a pig in the middle. Should give me at least one more to shoot at.

Fourth, man you have to be a bit faster on that trigger sometimes for those additional pigs. As Wayne Gretzky said "you miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take."

Keep it up!

Yeah, using the PIP gives me a lot of mixed results. Long shots are ok but picking up runners can be confusing as to which window you can pick them up on. In this case I think my mistake was not shooting a target in the center of the bunch and trying to split them up as someone else mentioned. I also get hung up on watching too long to be sure an animal is gonna stay down instead of quickly going to a second target.

The sounder seems to follow the lead sow. If you take her out first, there's momentary confusion.
If you whack the one on the far left... the impact "whack" of the hit triggers flight to the opposite direction.
In this video, the closest hog to the target chose a direction and the sounder followed that hog's lead.

Therefore, I'd squeeze and move the muzzle to the right after the shot, quickly pick a target and squeeze again. If you swing far right, that impact probably sends them heading left again (as they move away) and away from the chain link of the fence which might inhibit your POI. And, I agree with Diggler... if you snooze on the f/u shot, you're gonna lose.

Nice kill on that hog, however. All is not lost.

Yes, I've learned that also. I think I saw her but she laid down to nurse I guess and then I couldn't see her for the tall grass.
