Lost in the jungle at night

Took my camping neighbor (Tony) out hog hunting 2 nights ago. I instructed him to shoot if you get the chance. He shot one and the dam hog ran into the jungle. Tony wants to look for it thinks he can find it, it's pitch dark mind you. He finds it, to my surprise, then we realize we are now lost in the jungle at night. We both had state of the art cell phones but no way to know which way to walk. So we are dragging this dead hog around then I step into a hole full of water up to my knee, so I'm stuck. Tony says grab hold of me. I tell him to take my rifle then i grabbed the back of his jean and pulled myself out and Tony kept his jeans on. We determine we are hopelessly lost. I suggest we call someone from the RV resort, not far away, to come out and blow their car horn so we know what direction to go. I told Tony I can't call my wife because she already told me if I get lost she will call the fire department to go find my stupid husband. I call a friend to come out. We knew when he arrived because his headlights illuminated the tree tops . That is how we found our way out of the jungle. Next day everyone in the RV resort knew about our hunting trip. I'll never hear the end of it.

I have a google phone. My phone will tell me EXACTLY where I am.
Some nights we get lost in the middle of a 50-300A harvested peanut or cotton field. The ground fog sets in and we cannot see 20 yards.
My phone will show the field, precisely it's corners and the distance in yards. We just have to know approximately where we parked the truck.
It does not have the capability to take the parking spot as a way point.
Glad your safe. --- pruhdlr

It's a lot different at night !! You think you'll remember the way when you drive around during the day but nope. I have a friend who has ADHD or something. We hunted a small field that is shaped like a square like we always do. After we shot a hog he attempts to walk back to the truck parked in the corner of the field. I see his head lamp head to the correct corner then he turns and starts walking in circles.

I decided to walk towards him and ask him what the heck are you doing. He's in panic mode and says he's really lost. Truck was about 75 yards away ....

I feel your pain. While my properties are not terribly large, I can easily get turned around on any of them when it is dark enough and I don't have any landmarks to use as a reference. Both Google Maps and Map Measure apps (which I use for my distance measuring) will tell me where I am and if I can't orient myself, walking to a new position will show me which way I have gone and I can change directions accordingly.

Yeah I went chasing after hogs in thick woods once and got turned around/lost. Cell signal crappy. Decided to just walk in a straight line until I came to a clearing and then go back to where I parked the buggy.

Lol heck of a night. Glad you eventually made it out safely. Getting lost in the woods at night is a lot easier to do than a lot of people realize. Ive certainly done it.

I use GPS Test Plus app on my android. Very useful, save where you parked then will show you the direction back to that point and the distance. I have all my feeder locations saved so I always know the yardage I am from them.

Been there, too. If the sky is clear AND if the moon is out I have used that as a directional reference. As a last resort, I've marked via a GPS app a few important points on my phone, and can use those to figure out which direction I need to travel.
