In a strange set of circumstances, I got a call from a buddy who hunts down in Palo Pinto County asking if I could take on a new property from a buddy of his who hunts just down the road from me. The other hunter had taken a job in west Texas and had a landowner in need of help. Several phone calls later and a visit to the property and I was GTG. The landowner, a pensioner and part time rancher was in a bad way with the hogs to the point that not only had they hit his fields, but destroyed the lawn around his home.
He told me that they come around midnight. That is when the house cat took notice of them the night before and the wife looked out the window to see what was bothering the cat and saw a "cute little one" about 10 feet away. So I showed up at 10 pm and it wasn't too long before I saw them on the neighbor's place, but they weren't crossing the fence. Around 11:30, two boars came through the fence and were trotting to where the cattle feed. I dropped the first with a shot through the shoulders and the other made it back across the fence. I hung around for a while, but I think the runner warned off the other hogs. He taped at 40".
