Morning stalk found me about 80 yds away from a couple hogs. I decided to shoot shoulder shots today to check effectiveness of this caliber. It has been flawless up to now and the 2 shoulder shots left these two dead. #1 dropped and #2 ran about 20 yds before piling up. It seems to zip through the hogs pretty fastIMG_20181118_073518046.jpg IMG_20181118_073518046.jpg IMG_20181118_075640528.jpg IMG_20181118_092732957_HDR.jpg IMG_20181118_093726936_HDR.jpg and leaves only a nickel size exit but what happens inside I don't know. This was a 18" I put together this week for my wife. (She might get to shoot it too)

Dan I'd love to hear your thoughts on 224. Are you going to reach out there with it and see what it can do longer-ish range? What is your build made up of? Thanks!

Whatever opinions one might have about caliber preferences, dead is dead. Not much to argue about.

So true!! When I first started hunting, I heard so many different advice on what caliber to use. From non hunters to people who have shot like 1 - 2 hogs their entire lives.

And good hogs down Dan!!

To answer a few questions....so far have shot half dozen or so hogs with it. All have tipped over except the one today that ran 20 yds maybe 30 tops. When i tipped her up for pics the blood squirted out of the exit hole like a water gun going off. May have hit her heart. But the previous shots (except 1) were head/neck so anything can do that. Last week shot a boar at 20' in the shoulder and it fell over dead also. Shooting the 90 gr Fed. Fusions. I think this caliber has that X factor....looking to get the wife a doe next week or so...will post results.
Both uppers are Palmetto State Armory. The 20" is accurate enough for hog hunting, the 18" is a tack driver. I am not a long range target guy so don't have any experience with that so far. Not opposed to it, just no opportunity yet.
I would advise anyone who is bored with their current setup to try the 224 Valkyrie...it is fun and accurate and I think it is going to prove to be worthy to hunt with.

Lookin' like you got some fresh back strap in your freezer! Nice going. Good to hear you're seeing favorable results from pokin' 'em with the Valk.

Great pix.

I bet when you were a kid you used to make a fort with couch cushions.

Looks like you’re still at it...but the cushions are a helluva lot heavier and uglier.

That's great Dan glad to hear it runs well. I'm looking at making some more trips down to the 1000 yard range this winter and have been following 224. Nice hoggers
