Got my first thermal from Todd and finally got it mounted and to the range. I live in Pa and the temp was about 60 that day. I hung a hot hands on a few shoot n see targets. When i got to the bench i couldnt see anything hot through the scope. I waited about 30min then checked again and couldnt distinguish the handwarmer on the backstop. Any ideas? Current temp here is in the 40s. Pulsar apex xq50
Thanks!

Sounds impossible! Maybe get back on the space ship and return to Earth !!?? :D

Was it night time ??

I've used handwarmers for 5 years and never been unable to see them at under 500yds unless it was heavy mist or perhaps rain ... but if you are at 50yds ... which is my typical "hunting zero" distance ... and it is night time, then I don't see how you could not see the hand warmers.

Give Todd and call and he should be able to help.

Targets and/or backstop was in the sun, right ??
Remember "temperature differential". Very important with thermal.
If the handwarmers were hanging against a COLD Shoot-N-See you could have seen it. If the targets were hot,you could have seen a pill bottle with frozen water in it,hanging against it.
There is a thread here that talks about using muffler tape. --- SAWMAN

I use HVAC foil tape and it's worked great. Just cut ya a 1" square piece and slap it on whatever. I think the coolest we've sighted in was maybe when Myron was here last winter maybe 40 degrees? Works great in hot temps just stick it on whatever and let er rip. Enjoy the new toy it's gets more funnnerer the more ya do it!

I've bought hand warmers that didnt work. Not sure if they were old/expired, but they never heated up when I opened them up.

Did you verify that the hand warmers actually got warm?

Did you have an otherwise good image/view through the scope?

Shoot-N-see targets have a black coating that will absorb heat if in the sun and make it very difficult to see a difference from the hand warmer. As stated before, pay attention to temp differentiation.

It was daytime and the backstop is made of heavy black mat. The handwarmer was warm but not as hot as they usually feel but i figured id still see it. The picture focused very well but like i said nothing was white hot or black. I have some of that foil duct tape thats about 2in wide maybe ill bring that. Ill give it another shot Thursday. Thanks for the tips.

I'm thinking with the black mat background and the shoot n see target and the handwarmer that its all warm. If you had a piece of foil angled up a little that it would show up very crisp and detailed. Like they said above, it's all about temp differential.

I use metal targets heat up with small torch they stay visible for long time or frozen water bottle will show black on white hot.

Last time I sighted mine in I tried a new target someone had mentioned on a forum.. use an incense stick. Stick it in a box or something with the end sticking out about an inch or so, get it burning.. it makes a great small point to aim at.
