I missed an easy shot. I'm still annoyed.

Went out to a feeder that a friend and I had set up. The feeder has been operating now for about three weeks and the game camera showed several individual and groups of hogs coming, although not at any regular times. Sometimes nothing would show up at all, sometimes only deer. Still, I decided to sit out and see …

About an hour after sundown I spotted a heat signature coming out of the woods behind the feeder. At first I though it might be a coyote, but as it emerged it turned out to be a lone hog. It didn't enter the feeder pen (cattle exclusion fence) but came around to my side.

My problem was that it was partially hidden by weeds, and I made an error in shot placement. I shot based on what I could see, and I'm pretty sure the bullet went high. I need to learn to take more time and wait for the right shot. I doubt that this hog was going to disappear on me.

Live and learn. Video is only about 15 seconds. It's slowed to 1/8 normal speed so you can really see what happened. Next time …

That's just a rehearsal… you got this, that's a dead pig who hasn't read the memo yet.

Lots of us have made that mistake.

By the looks of the video, the bullet should have struck in the proverbial "behind the ear" location, which unfortunately was unoccupied by any significant structures, just muscle. It doesn't look like you missed the spine by much at all. To be honest, I am surprised your hog isn't down. With that said, I have lost hogs hit in about the same area and I have recovered two hogs shot in that area that had healed up fairly well.

I'm with Brian. Unless your rifle is off by a LOT, you should have hit that hog just about where you thought you were going to. It just didn't go down like the rule book says it was supposed to do. You should check the buzzard indicator. You might find what's left of him. Get him next time if he survived.

It's heavy woods and brush near the feeder, so buzzards would have a tough time getting to it. I suspect however, that it's very likely he was the main attraction at the Coyote Cafe before dawn.
And show us pictures of the hit!
If he appears in my sights again, will do!
